George Vardal, an engineer working at Ford Aircraft, and his brother Denis, also a draftsman in the department, thought Joliet needed a blueprinter. They decided they were the two men for the job, and in 1958 they started Collins Blueprint Service. Within two years, the brothers had outgrown the original location and moved to Cass St. With more space they offered additional services, adding drafting supplies and college and high school textbooks.
In 1965, through hard work and outstanding customer service, George and Denis again expanded their business, moving to East Jefferson Street, and changing the name to Vardal Engineering Supply to better reflect the variety of products they offered. Surveying instruments were also added to their product line. In 1979, expanding operations again, Vardal Engineering Supply was split into two companies: Vardal Engineering and Vardal Survey Systems.
Vardal Engineering continues in operation, with Denis and his daughter Denise at the helm. Vardal Survey Systems was created to handle the survey instruments, adding a full complement of field supplies and the emerging technologies of construction lasers and machine control.
