If it wasn't for the tripods and highlighter-yellow t-shirts, a Western North Carolina surveyor could easily be mistaken for a hiker. Lace-up boots, Nalgene bottles and pockets stuffed with Clif Bars - a typical day at work for a professional land surveyor may be a 43-acre boundary survey disguised a day hike. One difference, of course, is that most hikers don't have a 14-inch machete strapped to their belt, slapping against their leg with every step.
He snaps open a silver compact and wiggles it around, reflecting the sunlight at the instrument man. The foliage is so dense in the mountains, when we're traversing we use these to signal our location before we cut a line through the trees with the machete. This line may be several hundred yards long, and if it's wet, or icy. Let's just say surveying work is not for the faint of heart.
But what's all this "professional" business? Why does every surveyor seemingly go out of the way to include PLS (Professional Land Surveyor) after their name?

We are in the field or going to meetings as often, if not more, than we are at a desk.
Our preferred method of communication is e-mail, as we receive it both in our phones and at our desks.
If you have a new project, please e-mail steve@kudzusurvey.com.
This applies to construction projects as well.
Plan sets often fail to provide the job location, so we are left with all we need to know on site but have no idea where the site is.
With this information, we can be prepared when we call you back.
